Hub Whenua's Manaiakalani Film Festival Entry

This year we explored our passion for handball as more learners explore how to play the game during break times.

Our movie is about two boys who want to play handball and two girls who wanted to join in. But the four of them didn’t know how to play so they collaborate to research and practice.

We chose the song ‘Thunder’ by Imagine Dragons as we felt the lyrics helped explain our journey.  See if you can make a connection!

Oobleck

Last Friday Whenua Hub made Oobleck as part of our break through learning. We added cornflour to water and then had to mix, mix, mix. Next we added food colouring. When we touched it with our hands it felt ooie and gooie. It was such great fun.
This week we will use some of the words we used to describe it in our writing.

Collaborative Challenges

We have been learning about how to collaborate with different learners in Hub Whenua.  Our teachers have been giving us challenges to help us recognise how to collaborate.  Check out our photos from our challenge on Monday where we had to build a tower with only THREE pieces of newspaper!

Games Afternoon with Hub Ahika (Hub 6)

Today we had our first collaboration games afternoon with Hub Ahika.  We had so much fun learning the new games that they had created for us.

Hub Akiha is going to reflect on their games and refine them so we can try some new games in a few weeks time.

Trip to the Wetlands

Yesterday we went to the Wetlands as part of the trip we were planning as we investigated different elements of Break Through learning.

We were able to split into groups who were responsible for different parts of our trip.  These groups were:

  • Map makers - responsible for creating maps to help us get to and from the Wetlands
  • Food and water - responsible for educating us about how to keep hydrated while we were on the trip
  • Sun Safety - responsible for educating us for being safe in the sun
  • Tour guides/explorers - these groups helps us build our knowledge of the different parts of the Wetlands
  • Gamesmasters - these groups were responsible for creating activities to keep us entertained and engaged while down at the Wetlands.
We had an excellent time exploring the Wetlands and are keen to go back to explore further parts of the space - it is so close!

Filling Other People's Buckets

This week is International Kindness Week and we have been learning about how we can fill each other's buckets by doing nice things for others.

We have been learning to add more detail into our sentences by using connecting words like "because" to help other people understand why we are filling their bucket.

For this week's assembly, we created a video to show the rest of the school how we were filling our buckets in the hub.  Please check it out and let us know what you think!

Welcome to Whenua (Hub 1) 2017

We have already been at school for a week and we are having so much fun in our new hub.

We are focusing on "Getting To Know Each Other" with everyone in the hub.  We also are getting to know our teachers: Miss Lunken, Miss Wang and Mr Lewzey.

We have started some numeracy learning and are learning about statistics.  Look at how we are using our bodies to make a graph about our pets.

We are looking forward to displaying our learning through the hub blog, please come back to see other parts of our learning throughout the next year.
